Mini Tree Ornament tutorial

A quick and fun project for the holidays and a lovely way to use your scraps of fabric and batting!

This mini tree ornament is perfect for decorating your christmas tree and a beautiful embellishment for gifts. Or string lots together to create a festive garland!

    YOU WILL NEED

+ Liberty Tana Lawn Fabric scraps
+ The Strawberry Thief Linen scraps
    + Quiltlite Cotton Batting scraps
    + Liberty Bias approx 15cm (6″)

    EQUIPMENT

+ Needle – we recommend an #11 Milliners Needle
+ Thread – we love Aurifil!
    + Optional – sewing machine

BEFORE YOU START – MAKE THE TAPE FOR YOUR LOOP

Open your bias flat and cut along the fold to create two long strips

Working with just one of the strips, fold each long edge in toward the centre, and finger press in place

Fold in half along the length

Top stitch along the open edge to finish!

STEP 1 – STITCH THE TRUNK

Fold the trunk piece in half (a) and stitch along each side (b).

Snip corners on the folded edge (c).

    Turn right side out (d).

STEP 2 – LAYER & PIN THE PIECES

Place your pieces in the following order

     – batting (e)

     – fabric tree – right side up (f)

     – trunk – open edge aligned with base (g)

     – loop – folded in half with raw edges aligned to top (h)

     – fabric tree – right side down (i)

    – pin in place (j)

STEP 3 – STITCH PIECES TOGETHER

Stitch around the perimeter of the tree using a quarter inch seam, leaving an opening on one side for turning (k)

STEP 4 – SNIP AROUND CURVES

Snip ‘v’s into the curves, being careful not to snip through the line of stitching (l).

STEP 5 – TURN RIGHT SIDE OUT

Turn your tree right side out, pulling the trunk and loop and pushing out the corners to flatten (m).

STEP 6 – HAND STITCH TO CLOSE

Hand stitch the opening closed with a ladder stitch (n).

STEP 7 – TIE A KNOT IN THE LOOP

Tie a knot in the loop close to the to finish (o).
